Fiat, also known as the Fiat Group (FIAT or FIAT Group), is an Italian passenger car manufacturer whose main factory is located in Turin. The word Fiat is an abbreviation for the Italian automobile factory in Torino (in Italian: Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino). The Fiat group includes companies Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Maserati – which follows Ferrari – and Lancia – which Fiat still fully controls, unlike the previous two companies. Fiat also currently owns 20% of the American company Chrysler, with the percentage rising to 35% and then to 51% later. Thus, Fiat becomes the only Italian group to produce cars – other than Lamborghini, which is owned by the German Volkswagen Group -. Fiat is known for its small, economical cars.
Fiat cars are generally distinguished by the features of any Italian car, such as innovative design and sporty performance. Many Fiat cars are distinguished by their combination of economy and compact size, in addition to a sporty and practical character. Fiat was the first to introduce a turbo diesel system in 1986 in its large flagship, the Chrome. Its Fiat 128 (1969) was one of the first cars to adopt a front-wheel drive system and a transverse engine position. This car contributed to changing many methods of manufacturing small cars.
